I like to think of training like maple syrup. Now, stay with me. With any given subject or task that a learner needs to know or be able to complete, there's a whole bunch of surrounding information. Some of it's relevant for teaching, and some of it actually distracts the learner and makes training less effective. Just like a maple syrup maker boils away water from sap, a good instructional designer can boil down given information into a cohesive and memorable story.
Afterwards, you're left with a fantastic end product that's great on pancakes. Err, great for making effective and measurable behavior changes.
With this philosophy, I focus on building materials that reduce the learner's cognitive load, are efficient and user-friendly, and look good. Because let's be honest, who wants to experience a training that looks like it was built in 1995?
